During the Second Empire Napoleon III, Emperor of the French, undertook one of the largest urban transformations that developed Paris into a new modern city after the Industrial Revolution. One of his major projects was the construction of a new Opera House which style reflected the opulence of the Second Empire>
The young architect Charles Garnier had the difficult task to lead the construction that took fifteen years before the inauguration in 1873. This lecture will provide a highly detailed portrait of not only Napoleon III, but also a glimpse of Eugenie Montijo, his beautiful wife who is often compared to Marie Antoinette as a woman who played a major role in society and French fashion.
