Résumé: 

"Début 1937, André Nothomb, un militaire âgé de 25 ans à peine, meurt lors d’un exercice de déminage. Effondrée par le chagrin, sa femme Claude porte le deuil avec froideur et dignité, mais peine à s’occuper seule de son fils, Patrick, âgé de huit mois lors du drame. Voyant qu’elle peine à concilier son chagrin et sa maternité, sa mère propose alors de s’occuper du nourrisson, qui est donc élevé par ses grands-parents maternels."
