Join us for a special screening of Motherland, a 27-minute short film produced by Johanna Makabi, on May 22 at 5:30 PM at Frances Moody Hall, SMU.
Recently selected for the New York African Film Festival, where it will be screened on May 17 at the Maysles Documentary Center, Motherland is an intimate and poetic journey through exile, identity, and liberation.
About the film:
“I left my mother’s country, just as she had before me. In the heart of Harlem, I met Sabrina. An African American ballerina, she was the first in her family to leave the South for the Big Apple. She shared with me how dance freed her from her motherland.”
Through personal storytelling and dance, the film explores the emotional ties between heritage, migration, and self-discovery.
There will also be a Q&A after the film with the director and the dancer Sabrina Marie Ramsey.
Check-in begins at 5:30 PM
Screening at 6:00 PM
Q&A at 6:30 PM
